Born in Calgary, Alberta...parents are Clair and Rochelle Shields...majoring in fitness & wellness management.

Before BYU

provincial track champion with a personal best of 4:30 in the 1500m...placed sixth at Canadian Nationals in Montreal...twice was Athlete of the Year for Springbank Community High School in Calgary...track and cross country MVP all three years of high school...also played basketball and volleyball, leading each team to divisionals once. member of Canadian Junior team that competed in South Africa in March 1996...placed 77th at World Meet, with the fourth-best time for a Canadian.

BYU Hall of Fame

Freshman Year 1997

ran on the national champion team, finishing in 69th place with a 17:55 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships...Cougar Club Scholar-Athlete...placed first at the Stanford Invitational and fifth at the BYU Autumn Classic.

Sophmore Year 1998

opened the season with an eighth-place finish at the Mountain West Classic...took first place in the open division of the Stanford Invitational in 17:42...finished third at both the BYU Autumn Classic and at the WAC Championships...came in second for the Cougars (13th overall) at the NCAA Championships in 17:19 to earn All-America honors.

Junior Year 1999

finished fifth at the Mountain West Conference meet...posted a second-place finish at the NCAA District meet in 17:03...named first team and academic All-MWC...collected her third All-America award with a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
