STOCKTON, Calif. — BYU men’s golf posted a 2-over par final round to finish the Visit Stockton Invitational in fifth at 19-under par Saturday.

“I felt like we got off to a good enough start to make a run at the tournament today,” said BYU Director of Golf Todd Miller. “Things just kind of fizzled after a few early birdies and an eagle from Keanu.”

Washington State took home the team victory, shooting 816 for the 54-hole event. Saint Mary’s came up a shot short, taking second with an 817 team total. San Jose State and Utah took third and fourth, posting 829 and 830 respectively. The Cougars finished fifth with an 833 three-day total.

Cole Ponich led the Cougars, shooting 68-66-72—206 to finish at 7-under. Ponich finished in a tie for 10th, marking it his second top-15 finish of the season.

Carson Lundell finished a shot back of Ponich, posting scores of 68-68-71—207. Lundell finished tied for 14th, his fourth-straight top-20 finish.

Keanu Akina continued his successful fall season with his third top-20 finish in four events. He carded scores of 67-72-69—208 to finish tied for 17th, one back of Lundell.

Max Brenchley and David Timmins rounded out the scoring for the Cougar team, both posting a 3-over par 54-hole total. Brenchley fired rounds of 67-75-74—216 while Timmins posted scores of 70-71-75—216.

“It was an all-around tough day for the Cougars,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “We just couldn’t get anything going today. We didn’t hit very good approach shots, and putts weren’t falling, which makes it difficult to score.”

Brock Goyen matched Akina for the low round of the day for the Cougars, with a 2-under final round. Goyen carded rounds of 73-72-69 for a tied for 41st finish at 1-over for the tournament.

The Cougars will tee it up next at the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California, Nov. 8-10.
