Blue team wins scrimmage

PROVO, Utah – Malia Nawahine recorded a game-high 22 points during the BYU women’s basketball annual Blue and White scrimmage on Tuesday night at the Marriott Center.

“I was impressed with how our young kids played today,” BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. “We saw some good things from them and that’s always a positive for us. I thought our returning players played really well and are feeling more comfortable with our game plan. However, we do need to work on our inside presence.”

Over the course of two separate, two-period games Nawahine scored a game-high 22 points and tied for a game-high eight rebounds with Sara Hamson. Liz Eaton followed scoring 14 points while Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee posted 13 points and five assists.

Devashrayee scored the first basket of the night off a jumper giving the Blue team a 2-0 lead. Sara Hamson of the White team answered back with a jumper of her own tying the game at 2-2. However, 3-pointers from both Brenna Chase and Nawahine gave Blue the early 8-2 lead in the first period. The Blue team continued to dominate the rest of the period finishing off with a double-digit lead 19-8.

The Blue team extended its lead to 21-8 in the second period, as Shalae Salmon scored her first basket of the game. Blue was able to keep a double-digit lead the entire second period except for a Maria Albiero layup that brought the White team back within nine, 21-12. The final score of Game 1 ended with a 13-point lead for the Blue team, 39-26.

At the end of the Game 1, Nawahine lead both teams with 17 total points coupled with six rebounds. Eaton also scored nine points during the first game for the Blue team.

After switching up the rosters and zeroing the score the Cougars started Game 2. The Blue team, again, got an early lead from back-to-back jumpers making the score 8-2. The White team came back after Chase converted two 3-pointers narrowing the score to 14-12. The White team was able to close the gap even more as the first period ended, 16-13.

As the second period started, a Paisley Johnson layup cut the lead to 16-15. The Blue team went on an 8-0 run, making the score 24-15. With six seconds left and the score 36-28, Chase shot a 3-pointer to end the game at 36-31.

The Cougars will play one exhibition contest against Colorado Mesa University on Nov. 2. The game starts at 7 p.m. MDT and will be broadcast on TheW.tv with live stats available on the BYU women's basketball schedule page.

BYU opens the  2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 10, hosting Southern Utah in a 7 p.m., tip.

Blue won the first game 39-26. Blue shot 47.1 percent from the field in Game 1, while White shot 40.0 percent.

Blue went 5 of 7 from the 3-point line in the first period, and finished the game shooting 9 of 15.

Blue outrebounded White 20 to 11, while both teams recorded four steals. Blue tallied 11 team assists and White had seven.

Sophomore Liz Eaton (Blue) started the game 3 of 3 from behind the arc. Eaton had nine points in the first game.

Graduate student Malia Nawahine (Blue) led all scorers will 17 points in the first game, going 5 of 5 from deep.

Senior Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee (Blue) tallied four points and a game-high three assists in Game 1.

Freshman Maria Albiero (White) finished with seven points, two assists and one block.

Freshman Sara Hamson went 2 of 2 from the field, adding three rebounds, one block and one steal.

Team
In the second game Blue won 36-31, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field. White shot 36.4 percent.

White totaled 18 rebounds and Blue had 17. White recorded six steals, while Blue had three.

Players
Devashrayee (Blue) scored nine points, going 4 of 5 from the field in Game 2. The senior also had two assists, one rebound and one steal.

Sophomore Brenna Chase (White) had 11 points in Game 2, going 3 of 7 from the 3-point line. Chase also had two assists, two steals and one rebound.

Freshman Paisley Johnson had eight points and three assists in Game 2. Playing on both teams, Johnson scored six points for the Blue team, and two for the White.

Eaton (White) and freshman Ashley Beckstrand (White) both scored six points.
