HOUSTON – Sophomore Savannah Ware led BYU's women's tennis team to a 4-0 victory Saturday over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in Houston in its first dual match of the season.

“Today was a good first match for us,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “Corpus Christi is a tough team that gets a lot of balls in play. We played long points and pulled out the win.”

The Cougars got off to a hot start by quickly capturing the doubles point. Mayci Jones and Toby Miclat were the first off the court, besting Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin 6-3. The duo of Ware and Nicolette Tran won 6-1 shortly after in their match against Chelsea Horan and Jelena Dzinic. Since BYU had already clinched the doubles point, seniors Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood did not finish their match. They were tied 3-3 when it was called.

Needing only three victories in singles play, the Cougars again started quickly and clinched the victory three singles matches later. Anderson-Littlewood was the first to finish, beating Kerry Galhos 6-2, 6-1. Miclat gave BYU its third point, outplaying Martin on her way to a 6-1, 7-5 victory. Ware clinched the match for the Cougars, beating Horan 6-2, 6-2.

“Savannah was dominant in both singles and doubles,” Jones-Spencer said.

Jones, Tran and Sheehan-Dizon, playing at the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles spots, respectively, did not finish their singles matches as they were called when BYU earned its fourth point. Jones and Tran were both playing in the second set up one set to none.

The Cougars return to the court in Houston on Monday to battle the University of Houston.

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis opens up its season this weekend with two matches in Houston, Texas. The Cougars first play Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Saturday then faceoff against the University of Houston on Monday.

“We are really excited to get the season started,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “The girls have been working hard and this weekend will be a great opportunity for us.”

The Cougars head into this year, coming off their most successful season since 2007. Last year, they finished second in the West Coast Conference with an 8-1 conference mark and a 12-8 overall record. Six players received All-WCC Honors and Jones-Spencer was named the 2014 WCC Coach of the Year. BYU also went undefeated at home for the first time in 16 years.

Mayci Jones, Toby Miclat and Savannah Ware led the Cougars last year as freshman and will look to build on their first seasons. Jones played at the No. 1 singles slot last season and earned a spot on the All-WCC Second Team. Miclat led BYU in wins, going 23-10 on the year. She was also named All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles with Jones. Ware had the best dual match record on the squad, going 14-5 over the course of the season, good enough for All-WCC Honorable Mention recognition in singles and in doubles with teammate Nicolette Tran.

Seniors Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood return as another potent doubles combination for the Cougars. Last season, the duo went 10-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. They also received All-WCC Honorable Mention for their doubles efforts.

After this weekend’s matches, BYU will return home to face Utah State on Wednesday, January 28 in the BYU indoor courts.
