BYU tennis finishes fall tournament play with solid play at the CSUN Invitational
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – BYU women’s tennis had a solid showing at the CSUN Invitational, sending four student-athletes to participate.
FRIDAY
On the opening day of matches, transfer Leah Heimuli won her singles match 6-3, 6-4 against Portland’s Emily Soares. She also competed in a doubles match with teammate Emma Jewell, but they fell to North Texas’ Ponamareva/Surapaneni 7-5. Jewell also competed in her own singles match, winning in three sets 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 against UNT’s Kexuan Zhao.
Madeline Almeida won her opening singles match against UCSB’s Lise Sentenac 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, but lost her doubles match against Portland’s Oberg/Lukic alongside teammate Emilee Astle 6-0. Astle lost her opening singles match in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 4-6 to UCSB’s Amit Lev-Ari.
SATURDAY
On day two, Heimuli won her second singles match against LU’s Caisey Lee Emery in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, but lost the next match to APU’s Petra Ivankovic 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. In doubles consolations, Heimuli and Jewell pulled out a 6-1 win against CSUN’s doubles team Coetzee/Toboso. Jewell, who had won her previous singles match, fell to Utah State’s Carolina Millan 7-6,6-7, 2-6. She also played a second match, but fell in straight sets to Cal Fullerton’s Jadie Acidera.
Almeida and Astle played another doubles match on Saturday but lost 6-1 to UCSB’s Sentenac/Lev. Almeida also competed in singles play, losing to Liberty’s Kalani Soli 6-3, 6-7, 3-6. Her doubles partner Astle played a singles match but lost in straight sets.
The team will return to tennis action in January.
PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s tennis team continues its fall tournament play at the CSUN Invitational in Northridge, California Nov. 8-9.
This is the second consecutive year that BYU is participating in the tournament held at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The Cougars will bring their complete roster to compete in the matches including freshman Helen Jiao, who most recently advanced to the singles finals at the ITA Regional Championships.
Matches begin on Friday and will be played at the Matador Tennis Complex at CSUN.
