SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - With Aubrey Paul advancing to the finals, the BYU women's tennis team ends its fall season with a strong showing in the Utah Invitational in Salt Lake City.
Senior Aubrey Paul reached the finals of the singles draw-B where she challenged Sammie Watson of Utah. Paul pushed Watson to a tough three-set match with two tiebreakers, but was edged out, 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(5).
“Aubrey played really well the whole tournament and is happy with the way she played,” BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “Our team played well and it was a good way to end the fall season.”
The semifinals of the singles draw-B featured three Cougars.
Paul reached the final after topping teammate freshman Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Desiree Tran faced Sammie Watson of Utah in the semifinals but was unable to overcome the instate rival, falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Megan Price was unable to top Sonia Klamcynska of Boise State, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket.
In doubles, Olivia Howlett and Yvette Vlaar of LSU edged out BYU’s Price and freshman Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, falling 8-5 in the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw.

The tournament marks the end of fall play for the Cougars. BYU won’t play again until Feb. 3, when it travels to play Long Beach State.
PROVO, Utah – Wrapping up its fall season, the BYU women’s tennis team heads to Salt Lake City Friday to compete in the Utah Invitational.
Play begins Friday with the first round of doubles, followed by the first and second singles rounds. The tournament runs Nov. 4 – 6 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center at the University of Utah.
Two BYU doubles duos will compete in the tournament. Junior Aubrey Paul and sophomore Desiree Tran team up to take on Marlena Pietzuch and Manuela Pietzuch of Boise State in the first round. Senior Megan Price and freshman Meghan Sheehan-Dizon kick off competition Saturday in the second round of the doubles draw after receiving a first round bye.
Paul and Tran are 3-0 in fall play while Price and Sheehan-Dizon have accumulated a 3-1 record.
Freshman Morgan Anderson and Price will compete in the singles draw-A for the Cougars. Anderson will face a first round matchup against Boise State’s Marlena Pietzuch while Price takes on Wyoming’s Sasa Nemcova.
In singles draw-B, Tran will challenge Kaitlyn Brown of Boise State in her first round matchup. Paul and Sheehan-Dizon look to move past Idaho State’s Zamira Vasquez and Marian Tangarife, respectively.
Paul led the Cougars during fall play with a 9-4 record. Tran and Sheenhan-Dizon have recorded six wins each.
The Cougars will face opponents from Boise State, LSU, Wyoming, Idaho State and rival Utah.
