Hedengren and Wilcock Receive Academic Recognition

Cross Country runner John Hedengren and swimmer Justin Wilcock were honored last week for their outstanding academic achievements. In all, ten student-athletes representing seven schools from the western United States have been selected to this year's Men's University Division Fall/Winter At-Large Verizon Academic All-District VIII team. Athletes on the at-large team represented cross country, water polo, soccer and swimming teams.

The team is selected by voting among members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Each member of the team will now represent the district--which is comprised of schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'I, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia--on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot.

Brigham Young, UC Santa Barbara and Washington each had two selections to the team, while Arizona State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Pacific and Utah State each had one representative. Four team members--BYU cross country runner John Hedengren, UNLV soccer player Andrew Hooker, Pacific swimmer Andy Nonaka and UCSB's Amit Seker, a water polo player--are repeat selections from last year's team. The composite GPA of the team is 3.869.

To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at least his second year of participation at the school, and must be an important squad contributor.
