Steere Earns District Academic Award
After earning her first cross country All-America citation on the NCAA championship course back in November, BYU runner Melanie Steere has now been honored for her accomplishments in the classroom as well. A total of 10 female student-athletes from eight different NCAA Division I schools comprise this year's Verizon Fall/Winter Women's At-Large Academic First Team for District VIII as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), just be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.
District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
The District VIII winners advance to the Verizon All-America national ballot. The national Verizon Academic All-America Team will be announced on April 19, 2001.
