BYU Fifth in the Nation in Sears Cup Standings
PROVO -- Led by a NCAA National Championship in Women's Cross County, BYU wrapped up the fall 2001 athletic season in fifth place (228 points) in the annual Sears Directors' Cup.
Developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA TODAY, the Sears Cup was established to recognize institutions that maintain a broad-based program and achieve success in many sports, both men's and women's.
Stanford University, who won national championships in women's volleyball and men's water polo, leads the nation with 521 points. The Cardinal are followed by North Carolina (305), UCLA (271), Colorado (251) and BYU (228) rounding out the top five.
The final fall standings are based upon the completion of women's and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women's and men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo. Points are awarded annually based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women.
The Cougars continue to be one of the top programs in the country. In addition to the national championship in women's cross country, BYU scored points from all four of its other fall sports: football (ranked No. 24), men's cross country (No. 12), women's soccer (No. 17) and women's volleyball (No. 33). In each of the past five years, the Cougars have finished the year ranked in the Top-20 of the Sears Cup.
Five other Mountain West Conference schools finished the fall ranked in the Sears Cup standings: Colorado State (34), Utah (78), and New Mexico (103), Air Force (114) and San Diego State (118).
Complete standings, including a breakdown by sport, and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's web site at www.nacda.com.
