Auction To Benefit Women's Athletics

PROVO -- Seven impressive items, including a sideline pass to the 2003 BYU vs. Stanford football game, are included in the first- of-its-kind live auction held at the Marriott Center, Sat. Feb. 1 to benefit women's athletics.

The afternoon begins at 12:30 p.m., with a silent auction of over 123 gifts available to bid on the concourse level of the Marriott Center, followed by a 1 p.m. tip off of the men's basketball game vs. New Mexico. At the conclusion of the men's game, fans will enjoy a celebrity game, then the live auction, followed by the women's basketball game vs. instate rival Utah at 4 p.m.

The other live auction items are a grand piano, Deer Valley Ski package, a family reunion retreat package, a St. George golf getaway and a Marion Jones baton. The live auction will take place at the courtside seating area of the Marriott Center. The silent auction will continue throughout the afternoon and conclude at 5:30 p.m.

"We are looking forward to this grand event and are extremely appreciative to the many donors that have contributed to our fund-raising effort," said Elaine Michaelis, director of women's athletics. "This event will be a fun afternoon for Cougar fans and the money raised will assist in our efforts to maintain and improve our women's sports programs."

The celebrity basketball game will consist of local celebrities like Ruth Todd, Kathy Aiken and Sheri Dew. Football head coach Gary Crowton and BYU basketball great Fred Roberts will coach the two teams. Basketball star Thurl Bailey, Olympic speed skater Barbara Lockhart and Cosmo will be the referees.
