Marketing Department and SLC AD Agency Pick Up Honors
The marketing campaigns that brought thousands of fans to BYU football and basketball games were recognized recently for outstanding achievement in creativity and impact.
In this year's Utah ADDY Awards competition, five of the ads designed by BYU's marketing department and Richter7, a Salt Lake City-based advertising and public relations agency were honored.
The five awards included one for Billboard Competition for "Most Are Converted After Just One Meeting," two in a consumer magazine Fractional Page/Four Color for "Remember When You Took Your Son to Watch That Game On TV? Neither Does He" and "Chloraseptic Ad." The same ads also won for consumer magazine Full Page/Four Color and for Campaign Four Color.
"BYU athletic events are more than just a game and that is the approach we are taking with our marketing message," said Sr. Associate AD Peter Pilling. "We have had a great winning tradition at BYU and when you combine that with an entertaining ad campaign you create a new awareness. Response to our ads has been extremely positive and it's reflected in our attendance figures. Our partnership with Richter7 has been invaluable."
Game attendance for both football and basketball was up last year as season ticket sales for football increased by more than 2,500 from the previous year. BYU men's basketball ranked 17th nationally in game attendance and led the nation in attendance increase averaging 14,468 fans per game which is an increase of 5,838 from the previous year.
Richter7 President Dave Newbold said, "BYU deserves credit for taking some creative risks and we are thrilled to work with them. The awards and recognition they have received are reflective of their winning athletic program."
Last September, BYU received recognition for its promotion of football earning Utah Business Magazine's award for Best Marketing in its 2002 Best of Business issue. And most recently, the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) awarded BYU a Gold Award for its "Audition" basketball commercial.
