BYU Earns 125 Academic All-Conference Honors for Spring 2003
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU led the Mountain West Conference by having 125 student-athletes named Academic All-Mountain West out of the 622 honored during the spring semester.
Teams earning spring academic honors were track and field, swimming and diving, baseball, softball, basketball, golf and tennis.
To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at BYU while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
The men's and women's track and field teams ran away with a combined 53 student-athlete awards. There were 32 athletes named on the men's team and 21 athletes on the women's team.
The swimming and diving teams earned 39 student-athlete awards. Twenty athletes were named from the men's swimming and diving team and 19 were named from the women's team.
The baseball and softball teams pitched in 16 combined student-athlete honors with 10 from the baseball team and six from the softball team.
The women's and men's basketball teams received eight student-athlete honors with five honors for the women and three for the men.
The golf teams chipped in seven more academic awards. The women's team posted four while the men followed with three.
The women's tennis team added two more honors to total the 125 student academic honors awarded to BYU.
During the fall, BYU also had a league high of 48 out of 283 athletes earning MWC academic honors. Teams earning honors were men and women's cross country, football and women's soccer and volleyball.
The men and women's cross country teams earned 17 total honors. The men ran away with 12 academic honors and the national champion women's team had five athletes earn honors.
The BYU football team led the conference receiving 16 academic honors.
The women's soccer team earned eight honors while the women's volleyball team captured seven more.
BYU emphasizes academic excellence and with the addition of the new student athlete center, BYU will hope to increase the number of academic honors in the coming year.
