Former Cougar Fishburn wins final event on PGA TOUR Canada
(LONDON, Ontario) — Former BYU All-American Patrick Fishburn fired a 6-under-par 64 in the final round to win the Canada Life Championship on Sept. 15, at the Highland Country Club in Canada. His four-round total of 66-65-64-64—259 (-13) gave the Ogden, Utah, native a three-shot victory over David Pastore (-10) in the final event on the 2019 Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada.
“I played well all week,” Fishburn said. “I had rounds of 66-65-64 in the first three days, so my goal in the final round was to shoot 63. I got off to a quick start with two birdies in the first three holes and just kept it going. I almost holed out my final shot of the day from the fairway on 18 to get it done, but I played bogie-free today and was very happy with the 64.”
With the victory, Fishburn moved from No. 11 on the Canadian Order of Merit to No. 5, earning him 2020 Korn Ferry Tour membership (formerly the Web.com Tour) for 2020. In 12 events during 2019 on the PGA TOUR Canada, Fishburn was a consistent money-maker with four top-10 finishes. In addition to the Canada Life Championship victory, he tied for second at the Windsor Championship, finished third at the Bayview Place DCBank Open, and tied for sixth at the HFX Pro-Am.
“It was a great way to finish the season,” said Fishburn. “Highland Country Club is very similar to Ogden Country Club where I grew up playing golf. I played well in both the pro-ams earlier in the week and felt real comfortable coming into the tournament. I knew I needed to make a lot of birdies this week because there are so many good players out here.”
In July, Fishburn became the first pro golfer chosen to receive funding from the Tony Finau Foundation. The Finau mentorship program is designed to provide financial support to Utahns trying to advance in pro golf.
“I really appreciate the support I received this year from the Tony Finau Foundation,” Fishburn said. “Tony has been really kind to me. The financial support provided by his foundation has been huge. It really gave me the opportunity to focus on improving my game. It really paid off this week.”
