BYU finishes eighth at Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — BYU men’s golf finished its fall season with an eighth-place finish at the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course on Wednesday.

Oregon fired a 7-under par final round to finish at 19-under par and complete the come from behind victory over No. 6 Stanford, who finished at 17-under following a 2-over par final round. San Francisco shot 10-under in the third round to finish at 13-under for the tournament and secure third-place. Nevada and LMU rounded out the top-5 shooting 7-under and 5-over par respectively.

BYU finished just three shots outside the top-5 after a difficult final day where only one Cougar broke par.

Carson Lundell was the low finisher for the Cougars after posting a 1-over-par 54-hole total (70-71-73—214) and finishing in a tie for 28th. Cole Ponich fired a 3-over-par total with rounds of 70-71-75—216 to finish tied for 39th.

David Timmins shot a 1-under 70, the low round of the day for the Cougars, to move him into a tie for 46th at the end of the 54-hole event (75-72-70—217). Keanu Akina finished two shots behind Timmins after rounds of 77-66-76—219. Tyson Shelley rounded out the team score for the Cougars with scores of 71-79-80—230. Elijah Turner who competed as an individual fired rounds of 78-74-72—224.

The Cougars fall season comes to a close with a win at the William H. Tucker Invitational and a top five showing at the Stockton Invitational in five events. BYU men's golf will return to action when they travel to Arizona on Jan. 24-25 for the Arizona Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club.
