Former Cougar Miller Wins U.S. Open Qualifier

Former BYU All-American golfer Andy Miller (1996-99) qualified for the 102nd U.S. Open to be held June 13-16 in Farmingdale, N.Y. Miller shot 5-under par in the morning and 68 in the afternoon to earn medallist honors. The 24-year-old finished the day with a 9-under total of 135.

Miller will also be joined in Bethpage Park by his father, 1973 U.S. Open Champion Johnny Miller, who will help call the competition as an NBC analyst.

Miller's steady play throughout the day helped him overcome two bogeys in his second round. The former BYU standout followed those minor mishaps on the course by making birdie three out of the next four holes.

"I just tried to calm myself down, and not take it too seriously," Miller told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Miller earned All-American honors in each one of his four seasons on the Cougar golf squad. During his senior season, Miller helped to guide the BYU team seven tournament victories and a top ten ranking. The team also finished second in the NCAA West Regionals, BYU's highest finish in the Regional competition ever.
