Cougars Start Strong at John A. Burns Intercollegiate
HONOLULU -- In the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, the BYU men's golf team is in sixth place after an opening round 291 (+3) at the Leilehua Golf Course.
In their second spring tournament , the Cougars displayed a more consistent game, as three players had scores of even par or better. BYU was led by freshman Ron Harvey Jr., who was the only Cougar to shoot under par with a 71 (-1). Harvey, a native of Canada, shot 35 on the front nine, and continued his consistent play, as he carded a 36 on the back nine.
BYU seniors Manuel Merizalde and Kyle Wight stand one shot behind Harvey, as both shot rounds of 72, to remain even par.
San Diego State is the runaway leader after the first round, as it shot a sizzling 274 (-14), to lead second place New Mexico by 13 strokes.
The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is hosted by the University of Hawai'i, and BYU last participated in February 2000, when it won the tournament by nine strokes in shooting 830 (-34). The tournament is played at the Leilehua Golf Course, which plays to par 72 over 6917 yards.
Play will resume on Thursday, Feb. 21, and continue on Friday, Feb. 22, with tee-off times scheduled each day for 7:30 a.m. (HST).
