Miller Shines at Pacific Coast Amateur

BYU's Todd Miller fired a first round 70 on Monday to take a share of the lead at the 34th Pacific Coast Amateur at the Olympic Club's Ocean Course in San Francisco California.

Miller is competing with brothers Andy and Scott, all sons of legendary golfer Johnny Miller. Ironically the Olympic Club is where Johnny Miller learned the game from his legendary teacher John Geertsen. The Miller brothers are representing Northern California's Orange team and are currently three shots off the lead.

The Pacific Coast Amateur is one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the country playing host to teams not only from the U.S but from around the world. The competition is comprised of three-man teams from golf associations around the world and the high score from each team is dropped each day.

The Peru Golf Association's team took the lead for team competition shooting a 143 in the best-two-out-of three format. Peru's Aldo Jordan also shot a one-under-par 70 to tie Todd Miller for the individual competition.

BYU's Billy Harvey, representing Southern Nevada's team, shot a 74 and remains three shots off the lead both individually and in team competition.

The Utah Golf Associations team entered the tournament hoping to relive history by winning the competition for the second straight time at this venue. The event was held at the Olympic Club in 1984 and Utah won. Utah's team has its work cut out after shooting a team score of 149.

Competition will continue on Wednesday at the Ocean course and will be moved on Thursday and Friday to the Lakeside Course.
