PROVO, Utah--A native of Great Britain, BYU tennis player Francis Sargeant competed on a national tennis tour in his home country, winning one singles event and finishing in at least the round of 16 in two others.

"I played a few British Tour events last year when I came home as well, but the best I did was quarterfinals," Sargeant said. "After an extra year of development during my sophomore year, I matured a lot as a player which put me in contention this summer when I came home."

In July, Sargeant won the AEGON British Tour event at Frinton with a semifinal win over Sebastian Rey 6-4, 6-3, who plays for Tulane and a win over David Fox in the final match,7-5, 6-4, who plays for Middle Tennessee State.

"I tried to play as many tournaments as possible so that I can be ready for the fall semester and the upcoming season in January," Sargeant said. "The tournament had a few world ranked players, however I thought I could make a good run in the tournament despite being unseeded."

On August 17, Sargeant beat multiple world-ranked professional players to reach the quarterfinals of the West Worthing tour event before falling to the eventual winner, Joshua Goodall, 6-0, 6-2. The BYU junior wrapped up his summer tour by finishing in the round of 16 in the event at Sutton.

The AEGON British Tour provides a circuit of tournaments designed to give up-and-coming players the opportunity to gain experience in their quest to become professional tennis players as well as those already competing on the national and international stage.

Sargeant and the rest of the BYU team will begin preparations this fall for the upcoming season. The Cougars hope to build upon the previous season's success that saw the Cougars go 21-7 en route to their third NCAA tournament appearance in the last four years. Sargeant finished the season with a 29-10 singles record while also finishing the season 21-9 in doubles.
