Day Two sets the stage for an All-BYU singles final

The Utah Fall Tennis Classic capped its second day of competition Friday, setting the stage for an all-BYU showdown in the singles final between the top two overall seeds.

"After observing the play, we need to buy in as a team to working hard and doing things the right way," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "We look forward to putting in the hours it will take to accomplish our goals."

Junior Francis Sargeant and Sophomore Andrey Goryachkov will face-off against each other in the final match, guaranteeing a seventh-straight year with a BYU champion in singles. 

Goryachkov's first match of the day resulted in a 6-1, 6-2 win over teammate Nikki Rae. He followed that with a hard-fought win in three sets against Matthew Cowley, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2.

The No. 1 seed Sargeant played a couple of tiring wins to get him through to the final. In the morning, Sargeant faced junior player Brendon Kempin and came away with the two-set victory 6-2, 7-5. He followed that performance with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Matthew Pearce.

In the back draws, freshman Juan Canales advanced twice with a walk-over and a 6-3, 6-2 win. Other freshman, Jake Sullivan and Jeremy Bourgeois also advanced in the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, the Sterling Galli and Sargeant team advanced with a walk-over to the semifinal round where they faced the Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami team and came away with the 8-6 win to advance to the doubles final.

The final day of the tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The singles final will be at 10:00 a.m. with the doubles final being played at approximately noon.
