No. 7 Lozano and Vilms Knocked Out of NCAA Championships
COLLEGE STATION -- The BYU men's tennis season officially came to an end as Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms, the No. 7-ranked doubles team in the country, lost in the first round of the NCAA Championships, 7-6, 6-4. The No. 12-ranked team of John Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk from California came back from an early deficit in the first set to take the match in straight sets.
Lozano and Vilms finished the season 24-9 and were unable to advance despite their high seeding in the tournament. Fruttero and Kowalczyk avenged an early-season loss to Lozano and Vilms and will continue play Friday.
Lozano and Vilms broke serve early in the match and looked well on their way to winning the first set. Fruttero and Kowalczyk fought back to send the set to a tiebreaker, where they won 7-5. In the second set, the two teams see-sawed back and forth, but the Golden Bears were able get the break when they needed to and won the match.
Vilms also played in the singles draw Wednesday and lost in the first round. No. 28 David Martin of Stanford defeated Vilms in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Vilms finished the season with a 21-11 record in singles play.
