Lozano and Nyman to Quarterfinals in All-American Championships

CHATTANOOGA -- Erik Nyman and Carlos Lozano of BYU teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw in the 2002 Men's ITA All-American Championships Thursday.

Nyman and Lozano came into the tournament with an eighth seed. They got past the first round by beating Phil Stolt and Brian Wilson of Illinois, 8-4. They faced a tough team from Oregon in the second round but were able to defeat Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig 8-6 to advance to the round of eight.

BYU's head coach Jim Osborne said that despite the bad weather that has affected the tournament, Lozano and Nyman are playing very well.

"We played very good doubles today," he said. "We returned and served the ball very well and we just didn't make a lot of mistakes. I'm really excited for Carlos and Eric and how they're playing right now."

Nyman and Lozano will next face top-seeded Scott Lipsky and David Martin of Stanford. Lipsky and Martin are currently the 2nd ranked doubles team in the nation. Osborne said he is expecting a difficult match from them.

"Stanford is always tough to play," he said. "They are very smart players and they rarely over hit the ball. They just don't make a lot of mistakes. But I was very impressed with our guys today and I think the can knock Stanford off."

The match against Stanford will begin at 5 p.m. Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn.
