Lozano and Nyman Advance in Regional Tournament
LAS -- Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman of the BYU men's tennis team advanced through the first two rounds of the 2002 Omni Hotels Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships Wednesday, while four other teammates were sent packing.
Lozano and Nyman, who both received byes in the first round, easily won their second round matches, with Lozano beating Victor Zetterholm of the University of Denver 6-2, 6-3 and Nyman defeating Gus Treyz of the University of Montana 6-1, 6-0. Nyman only lost two points in the whole second set. BYU head coach Jim Osborne said he was happy with how Nyman and Lozano are playing.
"Today was a long day and tomorrow will be just as long," Osborne said. "But I thought thought that both Erik and Lozano played really well. It is still early in this tournament, so we will see how things go tomorrow."
Jeff Olsen was the only other Cougar to advance past the first round, beating Hans Gaber of the University of Denver 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. But Olsen came up against a tough opponent in the second round and lost to 12th-seeded Daniel Jung of San Diego State 6-4, 6-4.
Anton Rudjuk, Alonzo Medina and Jose Lechuga were unable to win their first-round matches.
In doubles, all three teams advanced. Lozano and Nyman had a first round bye. Lechuga and Rudjuk teamed up to defeat Jeremy Coll and Thibault Schram of North Arizona 8-5. Olsen and Medina were the other doubles team. Together they beat Stanislav Nevolovich and Ryan O?Neil of the University of Montana 8-4.
Play resumes Thursday, with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles to be played.
