Lozano and Nyman Advance to Doubles Semifinals at Regionals
LAS -- BYU's Erik Nyman and Carlos Lozano were able to advance to the semifinals of the 2002 Regional Championships on Friday but lost tough matches in the round of 16 in singles.
Lozano and Nyman were able to advance to the double's semifinals by beating Thomas Schoeck and Matias Silva of Boise State 8-6. They will face third-seeded Valentino Pest and Felix Hardt of San Diego State University tomorrow afternoon for a chance to play in the finals.
BYU head coach Jim Osborne is pleased with the way his team is playing doubles.
"Carlos and Erik played well today," he said. "They played a very good doubles team, but were able to step up their game and win it."
Friday was a tough day for BYU in singles. Both Nyman and Lozano went three sets in their matches but were unable to hold on to the victory. Nyman won the first set against fifth-seeded Divan Coatzee of New Mexico, but Coatzee came back and won the match 5-7, 7-6 (9), 6-2. Lozano also had a tough match losing in three sets to Ryan Redondo 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3).
For Osborne, the day was a tough one in singles.
"We just lost some heartbreakers today," he said. "Both of them had chances to win, but it just got away from them. They were both one service game away from winning the whole match, but they just couldn't put it away."
