Lozano Named MWC Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU senior Carlos Lozano has been named Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. This is his second career weekly honor.
Lozano, a Tlanepantla, Mexico, product, went undefeated in both singles and doubles play last week, helping the Cougars to a 2-0 record for the week, including a 4-3 victory over No. 48 Arizona. He started the week beating Northern Arizona's Thibault Schram, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles and, along with Erik Nyman (No. 7 doubles tandem in the nation), defeating Daniel Lundstrom and Francisco Lando at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. To secure BYU's upset over the 48th ranked Wildcats, Lozano, ranked 106th nationally in singles, defeated Carl Hagman (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) at the No. 2 position. Lozano and Nyman ended the day with a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles over Hagman and Paul Warkentin. On the season, he has a 10-6 record (3-4 dual) in singles play and a 20-6 record (5-3 dual) in doubles play.
This is the second consecutive week that a Cougar has been named the MWC Player of the Week. Last week, junior Erik Nyman received the accolade for his play at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions.
The Cougars have the next two weeks off but will resume play against Utah State on Friday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. in Provo.
