Cougars Compete in Last Fall Tournament
PROVO, Utah – Entering its last tournament of a successful fall season, the BYU men’s tennis team kicks off play in the 55th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Three Cougars will represent BYU in the qualifying rounds Wednesday - sophomore Travis Fillmore, and freshmen Francis Sargeant and David Doehring.
No. 91 Georgy Batrakov will skip the qualifying rounds and begin play Thurday in the main draw as the No. 5 seed. Senior Batrakov is 7-2 during fall play.
No. 53 Patrick Kawka and freshman Keaton Cullimore also kick off tournament play in the main draw Thursday for BYU. Sophomore Kawka has accumulated a 7-4 record this fall, while Cullimore has accounted for an 8-3 record.
Cullimore and Sargeant, and Doehring and Fillmore will compete in the doubles qualifying rounds doubles Thursday.
Batrakov and Kawka will team up to challenge opponents as the No. 4 seed in the doubles main draw Friday. The BYU duo has a 6-2 fall record.
BYU will challenge opponents from perennial powerhouses UCLA and USC, along with players from UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Azusa Pacific University, UC Riverside and Concordia. The Cougars will also get a look at West Coast Conference foes Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
During last year’s tournament, Kawka and former Cougar Evan Urbina represented the Cougars in the singles main draw. The pair also teamed up to reach the semifinals in the doubles main draw.
