Cougars Have Lift-Off at Shanico Invitational
CORVALLIS -- Sophomore Margaret Gibby leads the Cougars after two rounds of her first collegiate tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Gibby shot 76-73--149 to put herself tied for 15th place in today's 36-hole day, while the team sits in ninth place tied with Washington State and Charleston after shooting 309-309--618 in this season-opener hosted by Oregon State.
"During my first round, I found myself having to get out of a bit of trouble and trying to get up-and-down to save par on a lot of holes," Gibby said. "I learned from it and was able to play better the second round by giving myself more scoring opportunities."
A couple shots back from Gibby is senior Jessica Gardner who also played strong shooting 76-79--155. Sophomore Natalie Newren shot 82-77--159, and the two freshmen Symantha Mendenhall and Danielle von Arnim shot 77-80--157 and 80-84--164.
"I told the team what a great showing we had today and also what great potential we have for the future," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "Our team is so young and right now we just need to get some more rounds under our belt."
The Cougars have their third and final round ahead of them Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shot-gun start.
"In tomorrow's round I want to be as optimistic as possible and just put myself in a good mindset so that I can enjoy tomorrow as much as I did today," Gibby said.
California leads the 18-team field with a score of nine-over-par, and Idaho's Nicole Keller leads the tournament individually with a score of 70-71--141.
BYU awaits Tuesday's third and final round in hopes for a top-five finish. The Cougars sit 11 shots back from San Jose State who is the fifth position after today's first and second round.
