Cougars improve in second round

STANFORD -- BYU's women's golf team moved into 18th place after an improved second round at the 2002 NCAA West Regional on Friday.

BYU was led by senior Carrie Summerhays who moved into 29th place after shooting two-over 74. Junior Jessica Gardner moved up to 67th place after shooting seven-over 79. Nicole Newren was nine over

"We're looking better as a team, but we've got alot of ground to cover tomorrow," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus.

The Stanford course continues to keep scores high as only three team shot under 300 and, for the second consecutive day, only five individuals shot under par.

Pepperdine continues to lead the 21-team field, but UCLA and Cal narrowed the gap to three stokes. With thirty-one strokes separating BYU and eigth-place Washington, the Cougars are not likely to advance to the NCAA Championships. In their ninth appearance in the NCAA West Regionals, BYU has a very slim chance of making their first appearance in the NCAA Championships. The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m PST on Saturday.
