Cougars sign three golfers for 2002-03
PROVO -- First-year BYU head coach Sue Nyhus announced that Danielle von Arnim of Bogota, Colombia, Symantha Mendenhall of Phoenix, Arizona and Audrey Brownell of Avon Park, Florida have signed letters of intent to play for the Cougars.
"I'm thrilled with this group of golfers," Nyhus said. "It's a very balanced class with tremendous talent that will come in and compete for a spot among our starting five. These girls will compliment our talented core of returning players next year."
Von Arnim, who currently attends Colegio Nueva Granada-- a U.S. high school in Bogota, is the No. 13 ranked women's golfer in Colombia and is a 3 handicap golfer. She has attended Ledbetter Golf Academy in Florida and has earned numerous top 10 finishes in international and national events. In 2000 she finished 17th at the prestigious International Junior Classic in Mission Inn, Florida, and in June 2001 she placed second in that same event. She also placed 11th in the PGA Junior National in July 2001. Von Arnim is a student of former BYU standout golfer Roberto Herrera and is interested in studying engineering. She also plays competitive soccer and is a competitive dancer.
Mendenhall, who was the 2000 Arizona Junior Player of the Year, attends Phoenix's Apollo High School where she lettered four years on the men's golf team (no women's golf program). She was also captain of the Arizona Junior Americas Team. Mendenhall has earned six first place and 12 second-place finishes in Arizona Junior Golf Association events. Her uncle, Ron Mendenhall, played football for BYU in 1969-70.
Brownell, is a rising golf talent from Sebring High School in Avon Park, Florida. She is a three-sport star (golf, volleyball and basketball) who has only been playing competitive golf for three years. Brownell holds a 3.8 GPA and will be seeking a degree in Graphic Design. In the last six months she has improved her handicap from a nine to a four. This fall she won her high school district championship by shooting a 1-over par 72.
All three will enroll at BYU in the fall of 2002.
