BYU Maintains Fourth Place After Two Rounds

CORVALLIS -- The BYU women's golf team posted another strong round Tuesday, to keep a fourth place position at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational at the Trysting Tree Golf Club. With a combined score of 299, the Cougars have a score of 595 after 36 holes of play. No. 18 Arizona maintains a first place at a 36-hole combined score of 577.

"As a team there is a lot of good concentration," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus. "Carrie, Lisa and Nicole played very well today. On the ninth hole as a team we struggled with the pin placement, shooting several bogies."

Senior All-American Carrie Summerhays had another solid round of golf Tuesday recording her second 73 of the tournament. Summerhays charged from a tie at 12th to an 8th-place tie after two rounds. "She really had it going earl," Nyhus said. "She started off several under par and played steady throughout the day."

Jessica Gardner struggled Tuesday after an opening round 69, shooting a 78. Gardner fell from her first round third-place finish to finish tied at 12th going into the final round of play Wednesday.

Lisa Dernick and Nicole Newren marked scores of 75 in the second round, while Natalie Newren finished with a 76. Dernick is tied for 26th place after two rounds, and Nicole Newren shaved six strokes off her first round score of 81. Nicole said, "I had a really good mental round today."

Conference rival No. 12 New Mexico charged ahead from 12th place on Monday to finish 7th on Tuesday with a two-day combined score of 601.

The final round of the three-day tournament begins Wednesday at 9 a.m, when BYU will be paired up with Arizona, California and Stanford. "This will be good for experience for our team to play with the best," Nyhus said.
