Cougars in fourth after day one of MWC Championships
SUNRIVER, Ore.--BYU is in fourth place at the The Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship which began today on the Meadows Course (Par 71/5,851) at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
New Mexico leads after the first day with a nine-over 293. The Lobos have a seven-stroke lead over San Diego State, who is currently in second place with a score of 300 (+16). Colorado State is in third with a team total of 302 (+18), followed by BYU in fourth (311) and Wyoming (317) in fifth. The Cougars finished second behind New Mexico at last year's MWC Championships held at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
"The Course is real short and we just aren't hitting the greens as well as we usually do," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We've got to hit our approach shots better tomorrow."
Individually, there is a three-way tie for first place with Colorado State sophomore Mayumi Motoyama (35-36) and New Mexico seniors Elisa Kase (35-36)
and Ryley Webb (36-35) all shooting an even par 71.
Three BYU golfers are tied for nineth place. Lisa Dernick, Adrianne Gibby and Summer Pierce all shot first round 77s to lead BYU. Last year's Co-Player of the Year in the MWC, Carrie Summerhays, shot an uncharacteristic 80 in the first round. Summerhays has the lowest stroke average in the conference. Howard attributed BYU's first round troubles to his team's lack of focus because of finals week for BYU students.
"We've got several girls who are trying to take finals while we are here," Howard said. "Finals sure don't help our teams focus."
The second round of play will begin at 9 a.m. (PST) Tuesday morning, with the final 18 holes being played Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m.
