Summerhays earns second consecutive MWC Player of the Week honors

Provo, Utah--BYU All-American Carrie Summerhays earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after collecting her sixth career victory in the Utah Dixie Classic on Tuesday.

With her sixth title, Summerhays moves into a tie for all-time career victories at BYU with Pam Miller Gietzen (1976-80). Summerhays, a junior, has accomplished in three years what it took Miller Gietzen four years to accomplish. The Heber City native has earned two tournament victories per season and still has at least two tournaments remaining this year.

Summerhays has posted five top ten finishes on the season and leads the Mountain West

Conference leader board with a 76.3 stroke average this season. Last season as a sophomore she was named the Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year with New Mexico's Riley Webb. She also earned All-American honors after qualifying as an individual for the NCAA Championships and finishing 40th overall.

Earlier this season Summerhays collected win number five shooting a first round 71 in a the rain-shortened Lady Aztec Spring Invitational. Her victory this week in the Utah Dixie Classic at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah helped BYU finish in a tie for second against a field of 18 teams. Summerhays has a great supporting cast this season with University of Texas transfer Lisa Dernick, senior captain Summer Pierce and junior Adrianne Gibby. BYU has also received a lot of support from true freshman and Salt Lake City native Nicole Newren and senior returned missionary Merrilyn Gibbs.

Summerhays and company hope to continue improve in their final regular season tournament at the Mountain West Conference Championships on April 30 through May 2 in Sun River, Oregon. BYU will be challenged by returning champion New Mexico as well as conference foes San Diego State and Colorado State. After the conference championship BYU looks like a solid bid for the NCAA Regional Championships and a chance to qualify for the national tournament.
