Cougars Hanging Tough in Hawaii

WAIMANALO, Hawaii-Lisa Dernick and Summer Pierce shot a pair of 76's during the second round of the Thompson Rainbow Invitational Tuesday, moving the Cougars into sixth place behind four of the nations top 20 teams.

BYU's (304-307=611) for two consecutive rounds the Cougars played solid giving them a respectable sixth place. Dernick and Pierce made their 76's on a day that saw Hawaiian wind gust push scores up. Dernick moved into a tie for 12th place along with teammate Carrie Summerhays who shot a second round 78. All-American junior Summerhays was five over par after three holes, but recovered to keep herself among the top 20 individuals.

"We started off poorly, but we brought it back and played real solid during the back nine," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "This team is starting to mature and play consistent golf."

Four Cougars are among the top 30 in a very challenging field. Along with Dernick (75-76=151) and Summerhays(73-78=151), Pierce and Adrianne Gibby have also played strong. Pierce (78-76=154) is in 22nd place while Gibby (78-77=155) sits in 29th position. No. 2 Arizona holds a six shot lead over second place No.14 Oklahoma State heading into Wednesdays final round.

The third round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Invitational is tomorrow, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
