Cougars off to good start at Thompson Rainbow Invitational

WAIMANALO, Hawaii--After a strong first round, BYU is tied for fifth place at the Thompson Rainbow Invitational thanks to the play of juniors Carrie Summerhays and Lisa Dernick.

Summerhays is in fourth place overall after shooting a first-round 73. Dernick was also steady, carding a 75 and finishing tied for 12th. Teammates Summer Pierce and Adrianne Gibby shot a pair of 78s to give the Cougars four consistent scores. BYU is tied with No. 12 Oklahoma and trails leader Oregon State by only five strokes.

"If we could have made a few more putts we could be leading this tournament," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "It's an easy course to putt, but we are accustomed to playing on the Utah courses where there are usually strong breaks on the greens."

The Cougars look to adjust to the greens at the Olomana Golf Links during tomorrow's second round. The third and final round will be played on Thursday.
