Cougars off to a slow start at Spartan Invitational

Salinas, Calif.--Playing against the toughest competition of the season, BYU got off to a slow start under rainy conditions at the Spartan Invitational on Monday.

Playing against seven of the nation's top 25 teams, the Cougars sit in 12th place after the first round thanks to solid first rounds by Carrie Summerhays and Adrianne Gibby. Both shot 76 while teammate Lisa Dernick shot a first-round 77. But the Cougars lacked a solid fourth score to bolster the top three.

BYU is coming off it's first win of the season two weeks ago at the Aztec Spring Invitational in San Diego.

Alena Sharp and Rachel Bailey each shot two-under 70 to lead eighth-ranked New Mexico State to a 287 and the lead at the Spartan Invitational Women's Golf Tournament at Corral de Tierra Country Club Monday afternoon.

Round two will begin on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
