Summerhays in second place after first round
Albuquerque, N.M.--Carrie Summerhays is in second place after shooting a first round 71 in the eighteen-team field at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Thursday.
Summerhays birdied the last two holes to finish strong against a field that includes seven top-25 teams includeing No. 1 ranked Arizona.
"Carrie (Summerhays) had a huge smile on her face coming in at the end of the day," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "As a team we need to have more rounds like Carrie did today."
The Cougars sit in 13th place after the first round thanks to large, difficult greens at the par 73 University of New Mexico Championship course.
"We played well on the par threes and we were doing well at hitting the greens," Howard said. "But it seemed like we were attempting a lot of long 35-40-foot putts."
Besides Summerhays, junior Lisa Dernick played a solid round for the Cougars shooting 78. BYU looks to improve on their short game in the second round on Friday.
Lorena Ochoa leads the field after shooting four-under-par and has top-ranked Arizona two shots ahead of 14th-ranked Pepperdine. The Dick McGuire Invitational's final round will be on Saturday the 23rd.
