Summerhays improves upon 1st round score and advances in the NCAA tournament

Carrie Summerhays, BYU's standout golfer competing in the NCAA Women's Golf Tournament, finished today's round with a strong score of 75. In a state notorious for rainy weather, Oregon delivered a chilly day to the participants as they completed the second round at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Bend, Oregon.

"The weather was fairly good in the morning, with good scores, then wind and a little colder weather settled in -- perhaps a wind chill of 40 degrees -- and scores went up. The 75 was really a good round considering [the weather]," said BYU golf coach Gary Howard. "Carrie is within 5 or 6 strokes of the lead of the tournament and has a lot of opportunity to move up tomorrow. We have early morning tee times for the next two days, which may be an advantage to us."

Summerhays tied for third place among those who were playing as individuals and improved upon her first-round score, despite the poor weather conditions. Once again, she placed in the top third of the field.

The two top positions were both captured by Arizona Wildcats with Julia Kraschinski leading the field with a 4-under par and teammate Jenna Daniels following close behind with a 2-under. The Arizona team leads with a collective 8-under, surprising some other competitors. Georgia coach Beans Kelly remarked, "I didn't think anyone could shoot under par on this golf course, but those kids are capable. They can go low."

The third round of the NCAA Championships continues tomorrow at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Bend, Oregon.
