BYU's Carrie Summerhays completes first round of the NCAA Championships
BYU sophomore Carrie Summerhays shoots a solid 76 in the first round of the NCAA Championships on the lengthy 6,502-yard Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Bend, Oregon.
Summerhays is one of only six individuals in the nation to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Summerhays was 2 under after three holes and, after struggling briefly on the tenth hole, played a consistent game to finish the day in the top third of the field.
"The course is in excellent shape. It's a long and demanding course that has a few crucial holes that determine where you stand at the end of the day," said BYU golf coach Gary Howard.
The par-4 fourth hole proved to be the day's toughest test, yielding a 4.52 stroke average. All in all, today's golfers yielded only 9 birdies, 68 pars, 30 bogeys, 14 doubles and five "others" on the hole, which features water hazards in front of and behind the green.
"Carrie had a solid first round. She still has three days to move up - I'm sure she'll rise to the challenge," said Howard.
Tulsa sophomore Stacy Prammanasudh leads all golfers with a 3-under (69) after the first round of play. The second round of the NCAA Championships continue tomorrow at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Bend, Oregon.
