BYU women's golf team in sixth place after the first day of the Utah Dixie Classic

St. George, Utah (April 3, 2000)--The BYU women's golf team is in sixth place out of 25 teams after the first day of competition at the Utah Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah.

The Cougars are looking strong going into the second and final day of the tournament.

"Our drives are really solid, but we struggled with our putting. Some strategical errors were made today, but I'm confident they'll be corrected tomorrow," said head coach Gary Howard

BYU has come out with a crucial lead over Washington State. "It's really big for us to be leading Washington State by eleven strokes." said Howard. BYU needs to beat Washington State to get into regionals.

"Carrie [Summerhays] and Adrianne [Gibby] had really good rounds today," said Howard. Summerhays, who won this event last year, shot a 74 and is in tenth place after the first day. Maria Boden from Oklahoma State is leading all competitors with a score of 67 for the day. Oklahoma State ended the day in first place, with Texas Tech coming in second.

There is still a day left in the tournament with a lot of holes left to play, so anything could happen. Coach Howard concluded, "We ended the day off very well, so we're optimistic about tomorrow's rounds."
