BYU Takes 13th and A Little More
TUCSON (February 26, 2003) ? Although BYU finished in 13th place in the Arizona Invitational, the team accomplished all that it hoped for.
The Cougars repeated their second round score on Wednesday with a 310 in the third and final round. Plus, they also finished ahead of Colorado State, San Jose State, and Colorado.
?Even though we finished where we did, we really accomplished what we needed to by finishing ahead of those teams,? said head coach Sue Nyhus.
The only downfall was falling short of UNLV by four strokes, who is also in the Mountain West Conference besides Colorado State.
Freshman Catalina Guacaneme kept the Cougars strong in her first collegiate tournament of her career with a 72 in the final round to tie for 22nd (79-74-72?225). Sophomore Natalie Newren also kept the team alive with a 79 finish to tie for 33rd (76-75-79?230), which unfortunately ended with a triple bogey on the last hole. Freshman Danielle von Arnim pulled it together with a 78 (82-81-78?241) to finish tied for 71st. Sophomore Margaret Gibby and freshman Symantha Mendanhall had a tough tournament, both playing out of their ordinary, and finished tied for 78th and 85th.
?It was an interesting day and tough to watch at times,? Nyhus said. ?Natalie was playing great up until her triple bogey on the last hole, plus Danielle had four three-putts to still shoot 78, Symantha took a quadruple-bogey on her last hole, and Margaret had to go birdie-birdie on the last two holes just to shoot 81. So, it was a very interesting day.?
Pepperdine ran away with the tournament with a 14-shot lead over Southern California, leaving Arizona in ninth place. Yet, Arizona?s Erica Blasberg won the invitational individually with a score of three-under-par (69-73-68?210).
BYU heads to Houston for the Texas A&M ?Mo?morial at Blackhorse G.C. promptly on Friday with only one-day?s rest in Provo. A slight change in the line-up will cause Natalie Newren to switch places with her older sister, junior Nicole Newren, in the one-day?s rest so that Natalie can catch up in school.
