Mabray Wins All-Around, But Boise St. Gets the Upset
BOISE -- Boise State's season-high score of 195.350 and costly falls on beam and bars proved too much to overcome for the BYU women's gymnastics team. The Cougars, who beat Boise State in a home meet earlier in the season, scored a season-high 49.100 on vault and got a career-high performance of 39.350 from Jaime Mabray in the all-around, but were too tired to pull out the win.
BYU's vault score tied for the second highest score for that event in BYU history. All-American Kelly Evanson led the charge with a 9.950, tying her own career mark for vault. Angie Hickman turned in a season-high tying score of 9.875 in the event to help the Cougars to the fantastic vault score. Megan Shupe scored a 9.800 for the second meet in a row to give the Cougars depth.
"It was a great night on vault," BYU head coach Brad Cattermole said. "The kids went out and really hit in that event."
Problems began for the Cougars on the uneven bars, as Kari Dye, Brooke Craig and Evanson all struggled in the event. Mabray, who scored a solid 9.800 on vault, came back from a disappointing performance on bars Saturday against Missouri and scored a 9.775 to lead the Cougars in the event. The bar score led to a rough night overall for BYU though, as the Cougars scored a 194.800 as a team.
"Bars was probably the event we actually warmed up the best on," Cattermole said. "I'm not overly concerned with the score though because we have a couple of meets left and I think we'll do fine."
BYU also had two falls on balance beam, but Dye, Evanson and Mabray all had great nights in that event. Evanson and Mabray each scored a 9.900, which was a career high for Mabray in the event, and Dye scored a 9.850.
"We were a little banged up and tired going into the meet tonight," said Cattermole, referring to the Cougars' two meets in three days. "We need to put it together in the next couple meets and I think we can. All will be forgiven if we just hit at Regionals."
BYU will return home for its second meet in the Marriott Center Friday night when it hosts Southern Utah. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. and BYU hopes to convert a season sweep, as the Cougars defeated the Thunderbirds at Southern Utah earlier this season. BYU will then compete at Utah to complete the regular season.
