No. 44 Cougars Slip Past No. 40 Kansas State
Fairfield, Kansas (Feb. 22, 2001) -- Despite playing without Brooke Ferney, the Cougars' No. 2 player, No. 44 BYU slipped past No. 40 Kansas State, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon in Fairfield, Kansas.
BYU, 6-2 on the season, started out strong, winning the doubles point behind victories from Jodi Richardson/Lu Oswald and Dominique Reynolds/Elizaveta Khoudoiarova. They won by scores of 8-2 and 8-4, respectively.
"Kansas State is a really good team, and to be able to beat them without Brooke, I'm really happy about that." said BYU coach Craig Manning. "We played really well, the ones we lost were close ones. It was a good effort without Brooke."
Ferney did not make the trip due to settled fluids in her ear that won't allow her to fly. The problem does not affect her playing, but she couldn't make the plane trip. Coach Manning says he hopes she will be able to join them on Friday.
"We have a tough match on Friday against Kansas," said Manning. "They barely lost to Texas, 4-3, and Texas is in the top ten. Hopefully Brooke will be able to make it out here tommorrow."
In singles, the Cougars split matches with Kansas State. Richardson defeated Alena Jecminkova, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2), in the No. 1 spot, while Lindsay Ferrell and Elyse Jensen both won in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots.
BYU will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the University of Kansas on Friday and No. 6 Notre Dame on Saturday.
