BYU Women's Tennis Team Defeats SMU In Dual Meet

PROVO -- In a tightly fought match that saw three singles matches go three sets, the BYU women's tennis team defeated Southern Methodist 5-2 in a dual match Friday at the Indoor Tennis Courts in Provo, Utah.

BYU senior Eline Chiew used three sets to defeat Dee Dee Herring 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 in number one singles. The number two singles match also saw three sets, with SMU's Megan Russell defeating Jodi Richardson 0-6, 6-1, 7-5. The Cougars' Kim Kelly defeated Katie Pruett 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"We needed this so bad," BYU coach Craig Manning said. "This was a tough match. We didn't play last week and we came out a little flat. We had a good team effort and that helped us pick up the win."

In doubles, BYU swept the Mustangs by winning the number one, two and three doubles matches 8-6, 8-5, 8-4. Richardson and Kelly won the number one doubles match over Russell and Lindsey Bruce.

The win improves BYU's record to 4-3 in dual matches. The Cougars go on the road next week to face Wisconsin, Kansas State and Northwestern.
