BYU Loses In First Round Of Minnesota Court Classic To Virginia Commonwealth
BLOOMINGTON -- In its opening dual match of the season, the BYU women's tennis team lost to Virginia Commonwealth University 6-0 in the opening round of the Minnesota Court Classic at the Northwest Athletic Club at 98th Street in Bloomington, Minn.
The Rams swept the singles matches and there were no doubles matches played. In number one singles, No 22 Eline Chiew of BYU lost to 26th-ranked Martina Nedelkova, 6-3, 6-3. VCU's Andrea Ondrisova, ranked No. 56 in the country, won the number two singles match 6-0, 7-5 over Jodi Richardson.
In the only two matches to go three full sets, Kate Vasylyeva of VCU defeated Liza Khoudoiarova 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 in number three singles and BYU's Tara Ferguson was defeated by Raluca Ciulei 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
In number four singles, Yana Sokolenko of VCU defeated freshman Dominique Reynolds 6-2, 6-2. Myla Teterina and Kim Kelly were tied 6-3, 2-6, 2-2 when Kelly retired to give the match to Teterina.
The Cougars will play Minnesota in the consolation round of the tournament Saturday. Virginia Commonwealth will face Pepperdine in the championship round.
