First Day of BYU Invitational

PROVO -- On the first day of the BYU Invitational women's tennis tournament, only one Cougar remains in singles and only one BYU doubles team was eliminated from the doubles draw.

The lone Cougar remaining in the singles bracket is senior Dominique Reynolds. She began the day defeating Holly Anderson of Utah State 6-0, 6-2. In the second round she easily defeated Caroline Pongratz of Colorado State 6-0, 6-3. She will play Jemima Haywood of Boise State in the quarterfinals.

Despite the fact that all but one of the girls have been eliminated from the singles bracket, head coach Craig Manning feels pretty good about how everyone is playing.

"I thought we played really well, considering it is so early in the season," Manning said. "We had our chances in some of the matches but we were just unable to capitalize on those opportunities."

In doubles, Nicole Schneider and newcomer Hadley Macfarlane were the only doubles team that didn't advance to the second round. They lost to Alisha Ayling and Renata Stoop of BSU 8-3.

Coach Manning said he was impressed with the teams that came to the invitational this year, particularly BSU and Utah.

"Boise State has four girls in the singles quarterfinals and that is impressive," Manning said. "Utah also looks a lot tougher than they were last year."

Play resumes Friday morning, with matches beginning at 10 a.m. and going on until 5 p.m.
