Macfarlane and Schneider in Doubles Quarterfinals of Regionals
TULSA -- After the third day of play at the 2002 Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday, only one BYU doubles team remains in the main draw. Hadley Macfarlane and Nicole Schneider were able to win twice to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Macfarlane and Schneider first won in the round of 32 by beating Cassie Kasteler and Joanna Zyndzo of Utah 8-5. They later went on to beat Kristen Balk and Karen Kmiec of Northern Arizona 9-7 to advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played Saturday morning.
Despite losing seven matches Friday, BYU head coach Craig Manning said he was very pleased with the way his team has been playing in the regionals.
"Thursday was awesome. We won seven of eight matches yesterday," said Manning. "Today, we still played very well. We just played better players. Everyone played seeded players that were ahead of them so we didn't lose any matches we weren't suppose to. We almost won some we weren't suppose to."
Dominique Reynolds is the only Cougar to win in singles. She beat Tiffany Robertson of New Mexico 6-1, 6-2 in the round 32 before losing to Linda Faltynkova of Oklahoma State 6-2, 6-2 in the next round.
"Overall, the tournament has been a good one for us," said Manning. "We have been playing really well. I hope we can carry this over into the regular season in January."
