Jones Shines in Finals
PROVO -- McCall Jones claimed both the singles and doubles title Saturday at the BYU Invitational. In both matches, she faced fellow BYU players as the Cougars started the fall season with dominant performances.
“It was a great start to the fall season,” BYU coach Joey Johnson said. “The girls played hard and were pretty solid.”
The sophomore defeated teammate Kristina Doerr in singles to clinch her second consecutive singles championship at the tournament. Jones seemed unstoppable as she won the first set 6-2 but veteran Doerr brought big game to the second set and took it 7-6. The two Cougars looked equally strong in the third, but Jones eventually pulled away to earn a 6-3 scoreline and her second championship.
Jones and Doerr had little time to rest before joining their respective partners for the doubles final. Jones paired with fellow sophomore Megan Price and Doerr shared the court with Romina Nedakovic.
From the start, Jones and Price seemed to find their rhythm. They lead the entire match and took top honors with an 8-3 win.
“There were some good matches,” Johnson said. “The players handled themselves well.”
