PROVO, Utah – Senior Tyler Haws scored a game-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds to lead BYU men’s basketball over San Diego 75-62 on senior night at the Marriott Center.

“I’m proud of our guys and proud of our effort," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "We got off to a slow start but we got it going. There are so many fun memories in this building and you put in so much hard work with all these guys, winning and finishing on a good note felt really good.”

Haws is seven points away from passing Jimmer Fredette for first on BYU’s all-time scoring list. Kyle Collinsworth added a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and a block.

Senior Anson Winder finished with 15 points with Skyler Halford contributing three points and three rebounds off the bench.

The Cougars got off to a slow start with their first points coming from Winder’s drive at the 13:06 mark and trailed 7-2 to USD. Ryan Andrus connected from deep and added a free throw to give BYU its first lead of the game at 12-11 with 9:10 left in the half. On the next possession, Halford’s steal and assist to Collinsworth capped a 6-0 run for a three-point lead.

Both teams traded baskets until four-straight free throws by Chase Fischer and Corbin Kaufusi gave the Cougars a 26-23 lead with under four minutes left. After the Toreros tied the game at 28, Halford’s 3-pointer and Collinsworth’s trip to the charity stripe gave BYU a 33-28 lead at the half.

Collinsworth entered halftime with a team-high 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. Haws followed with eight points with Winder and Andrus adding four points each. BYU closed the half on an 11-5 run and there were a total of nine lead changes between the two teams.

Winder and Haws opened the second half on a 12-2 run, which included three buckets from beyond the arc and the 45-30 lead with 15:04 on the clock. Winder’s first steal of the game led to a layup at the other end and was followed by Haws’ three-point play to extend the Cougars’ lead to 54-37 at the 11:23 mark.

With 8:05 remaining, Frank Bartley IV assisted Isaac Neilson for the dunk to maintain a 15-point lead. Haws went on a solo 5-0 run that included his second three-point play to hold onto a 67-53 lead. BYU closed out the game from there, 75-62.

The Cougars outrebounded USD 38-23 and outscored the Toreros 12-3 on fast break points.

“We are feeling good and have won four in a row but we are still hungry," Rose said. "We feel like we have a lot to prove and in a lot of ways we feel like our tournament has already started. We have to bring it every time we step on the floor. I feel like we are in a good spot but we are still hungry to keep going.”

BYU hits the road for its last two games of conference play starting with Portland next Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
