PROVO, Utah -- It was Nielsen night at the NIT for BYU on Wednesday night. No, it had nothing to do with television ratings, but rather the Cougars' duo of Eric and David Nielsen (no relation).

In all, the Nielsen tandem combined for 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Although not the most eye-grabbing numbers, it was significant considering their normal contribution for the Cougars. Add decent nights from Cougar stars Mekeli Wesley and Terrell Lyday along with a 14-point, five-assist night from point guard Michael Vranes and you've got an 81-54 win over Bowling Green in the first round of the NIT.

On one end of the court it was a Nielsen (David) guarding MAC Player of the Year Anthony Stacey. On the other end of the court it was a Nielsen (Eric) shooting 6-for-6 from the field.

Eric Nielsen's performance wasn't so much a surprise after a pair of breakout games at the Mountain West Tournament last week. But he still entered the game averaging just 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He finished with 13 points and four boards on Wednesday.

David Nielsen, however, has played sparingly all season long. His career-high 34 minutes against Bowling Green was half his season total of 68 minutes.

"It was just fun to be out there," said Nielsen, a redshirt freshman from Brighton High School.

He finished the night with 7 points and seven rebounds, but his real contribution came against the 6-4, 235-pound Stacey. Stacey finished the night with 11 points -- a full 6 below his average -- and just 5-of-12 shooting.

"Everybody has an opportunity to have their time," Cleveland said. "But if Les [Rivers] is healthy the whole year, David may have never gotten the opportunity.

"What he does, he does well. He knows his role on this team and that's a tribute to him; not everybody needs to shoot 15 times a game."

The Nielsen duo's biggest moments, however, came in the first half with Lyday and Wesley sitting on the bench most of the half, playing just a combined 17 minutes.

Lyday suffered a concussion less than three minutes into the game. Lyday suffered the injury while tumbling to the floor with Stacey. The heated moments that followed led to double-technicals on Stacey and Wesley.

"It was just a minor altercation -- nothing personal," Stacey said. "Wesley said a few things, I said a few things ... but it was nothing, just college basketball."

It was Wesley's second personal foul, and it led to boos the rest of the night for Stacey every time he touched the basketball.

"They had a good crowd ... that's their job," Stacey said. "I like that."

Lyday still managed a team-high 15 points, but a migraine induced by the concussion cut his minutes short for the night. That opened the door for Nielsen and Nielsen, who helped the Cougars to a 38-28 halftime lead. Eric Nielsen picked up the offensive slack, scoring 9 straight points for BYU to keep the game tight. David Nielsen, meanwhile, held Stacey to 3 first-half points and brought all 10,010 fans to their feet by fouling Dave Esterkamp, who went up for what appeared to be a big dunk.

"That was my fault because he was my man," he said of the play.

The game remained close until David Nielsen's 3-point play with 4:46 before the break gave the Cougars a 28-23 lead. That started a 13-5 run to end the half.

Lyday and Wesley took over the scoring duties in the second half. Lyday scored 11 points in his 11 second-half minutes and Wesley, who had struggled offensively in recent games, finally looked comfortable in the post again.

"The old Mekeli Wesley came back in the second half," said Cleveland, who attributed the difference to Wesley being able to play fewer minutes than usual.

The Falcons hung around for five minutes or so of the second half. Then Lyday's 3-pointer with 14:30 sparked a 15-4 run, capped by a two-handed breakaway dunk by Vranes with 8:22 remaining. By then the Falcons trailed 60-42.

"Stepping up maybe is an overused term, but somebody needed to make a play," Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich said.

For the night Bowling Green, which entered the game third in the country in field-goal percentage (.498), shot just 33 percent against the Cougars.

"There's a lot of teams that have come in here and not shot 40 percent and that's a credit to their defense," Dakich said.

As for BYU it was the first trip to the postseason since an NCAA berth in 1995 and their first NIT game since 1994. BYU will play the winner of Thursday night's Colorado-Southern Illinois game on either Monday or Tuesday. The site of the game will be decided following that game, but the chance of another game at the Marriott Center seems likely with Wednesday's solid crowd.

Scouting Bowling Green

Bowling Green State University has a 22-7 record and won the MAC regular season title with a 14-4 record. The Falcons, who won their second conference title in the last four years, have won six of their last seven games and were one of several teams that many thought would gain an NCAA berth but were not selected to the field of 64. Bowling Green finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record at home and an 8-6 record on the road. The Falcons were 2-1 on a neutral floor and had an 8-3 non-conference record. Bowling Green's seven losses came at Northern Iowa (83-75 in OT), at West Virginia (100-54), at Western Michigan (91-82), at Kent (82-64), at Ball State (71-61), at Toledo (79-68) and vs. Miami of Ohio at the conference tournament (58-56 in OT). The Falcons are coming off the Miami of Ohio loss and have not played since March 5. Bowling Green has lost back-to-back games only once this season (Northern Iowa and West Virginia). This will be the Falcons' 12th appearance in the NIT, and the team's first in three years. BGSU has an all-time record of 6-11 in the tournament, with a championship-game appearance in 1945 and a trip to the semifinals in 1949. BGSU's last NIT game was a 1997 loss at West Virginia, 98-95. BGSU head coach Dan Dakich is in his third season after taking over the program on April 21, 1997. His teams have shown steady improvement each season. The Falcons posted a 10-16 overall mark and a 7-11 record in MAC play his first season before rebounding last year to finish 18-10 overall and 12-6 in loop action. Dakich spent 16 years at Indiana, the first four as a player for the Hoosiers, and the last 12 as an assistant coach under Bob Knight, before taking the job at Bowling Green, his first head coaching position. His teams have compiled a 50-33 record at Bowling Green. Senior Anthony Stacey is the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and was selected to the All-MAC First Team, while senior Dave Esterkamp and sophomore Len Matela earned honorable mention. Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich was second in the league's coach-of-the-year voting. Stacey, a 6-4 forward who averages 17 points and six rebounds per game, is Bowling Green's all-time BG scoring leader ( 1,927 points) and is also the career steals leader with 225 thefts. He ranks seventh in with 752 career rebounds. Four Falcons score in double figures and the team averages 75.8 points per contest. As a team, Bowling Green also ranks third in the country in field-goal percentage in the latest NCAA statistics released March 8. The Falcons were shooting .498 from the field. The Falcons also are among the national leaders in free-throw percentage, shooting .744 to rank 17th in the country. BGSU has shot .500 or better from the field in 15 games this season, and over .600 in five of those contests. One of the Falcons non conference wins was over BYU's former WAC foe, Hawaii (53-49 in Honolulu).

Series Notes

This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools. The two schools have not played since 1956. BYU leads the series 2-1 after winning back-to-back games in Provo during the 1956-57 season. BYU won 73-56 the first night and then 78-69 the next. The Falcons won the first meeting in 1949, a 75-50 win at Bowling Green.

BYU MWC Tournament Notables

Nielsen averaging 9.0 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds last week, including 12.5 points and 10 rebounds in the two tournament victories. Against New Mexico, he pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds while scoring eight points. Nathan Cooper has started the last four games, his only starts of the season, and BYU is 4-1 in those games. BYU coach Cleveland has used seven different lineups this season.

Other Notables

• BYU has vastly improved under Head Coach Steve Cleveland. Since taking over a 1-25 program three years ago, Cleveland has guided BYU to 9-21 and 12-16 seasons in his first two years and 20-9 this year. Last year, BYU improved its home record from 4-10 to 9-5 and won its first WAC Tournament contest since 1994, upsetting heavily favored TCU 90-74. This year Cleveland's team finished 12-2 at home and has advanced to the MWC tournament finals. BYU has not had a 20-win season since 1994-95 when they finished 22-10. It was also the last year BYU qualified for a post-season tournament (NCAA).

• During this year's early signing period, Coach Cleveland received NCAA Letters-of-Intent from five players who make up one of the best recruiting classes to ever commit to play basketball at BYU. Signing were Jesse Pinegar, 6-9 and the No. 1-rated center in the West; Derek Dawes, 6-11 and the No. 3-rated center in the West; Jacob Chrisman, a 6-9 forward; Travis Hansen, a 6-6 transfer from Utah Valley State College; and Austin Ainge, a 6-1 point guard and son of BYU and NBA great Danny Ainge.

The Cougars are 8-1 when they shoot 50 percent or better on three-point attempts (lost at S.Alabama despite hitting season high 61.5 percent on threes). BYU made nine threes, two off its high for the season, while attempting a season-high 23 treys at Wyoming. BYU has made nine or more threes three previous times this season -- all in road wins (11 at FIU, 9 at Utah State and 10 at UNLV). Since entering its first game with CSU when BYU was third in the nation in three-point shooting at 42 percent, BYU went 55-168 (.327) on threes in the next 11 games to finish the regular season and fall to 38.3 percent. BYU went 5-6 record in those games. In those 11 games, Terrell Lyday shot 17-52 (.327) on threes, Michael Vranes 9-29 (.310), Mekeli Wesley 7-24 (.292),Nathan Cooper 6-16 (.375) and Todd Christensen 13-34 (.382).

Lyday From Behind the Arc

Lyday set a BYU record streak for consecutive games with a three-pointer at 21 this year (first 21 games). The prior consecutive games record was 16 set by Andy Toolson in 1990. He was 1-3 vs. UNLV and has made a three in 28 of BYU's 30 games this year. Lyday was 0-3 vs. Utah, made 2-5 vs. UNM and made three treys last Saturday vs. San Diego State-- the seventh time he has made three or more treys in a game this year, but the first time in the last 10 games. He has 17 games this year with two or more threes in a game.

More BYU's Record When ...

BYU is 2-1 in games decided by two points or less; 1-2 in 3-5-point games; 4-2 in 6-9-point games; and 13-5 in double-digit margins. Mekeli Wesley has either shared or been BYU's top scorer in 16 games this season and the Cougars are 9-7 in those games. He has also been BYU's top rebounder in 14 games. BYU is 9-5 in those games. BYU is 5-5 in the games when Mekeli Wesley was both the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Terrell Lyday has shared or led BYU in scoring in 12 games and BYU is 8-4 in those contests. When the Cougars get good scoring efforts from its supporting cast, they have been hard to beat. BYU is 8-1 when Michael Vranes has scored in double figures and 7-1 when Christensen scores in double digits. They were 6-1 (all but at UNM) when Rivers reaches double figures, and are 5-1 (all but at AFA) when Eric Nielsen had double digits and 5-2 when Cooper (except UNM and at Utah) has scored 10 or more.

Wesley Moves Up Scoring Ladder

Mekeli Wesley, who now has 1,132 career points, moved into 22th place on BYU's career scoring list. He needs 12 points to pass Doug Howard (1,143 points, 1968-70), 19 to overtake Elwood Romney (1,150 points, 1930-33), and 25 to surpass Kari Limo (1,156 points, 1967-69). He most recently passed Steve Schreiner (1,128 points, 1989-91). Wesley is only the 32nd player in BYU history to reach 1,000 points and only the eighth to do so as a junior (even though he missed part of sophomore season). Danny Ainge (1978-81) tops the career list at 2,467 points. Other players to reach 1,000 points before the end of their junior years were Ainge, Michael Smith, Devin Durrant, Russell Larson, Fred and Ken Roberts and Jeff Chatman.

Defense

BYU's defense has been a large part of the Cougars success this year as is evident by BYU's two tournament wins last week when BYU held its opponents to 29 percent shooting, including 20 percent on threes. BYU held Utah to its season low in FG percentage (30.9) and FGs made (17). Only six teams have shot 50 percent or better against BYU. UNLV shot 52 percent, Wyoming shot 51 percent; CSU 58.5; UNM 51; and Utah 56 percent. Arizona is the other team at 54 percent. In BYU's four other losses, S. Alabama shot .490, UNM .452, Utah .429 and AFA .392. The Cougars ranked first in the MWC in both field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense. They have held opponents below a 40 percent shooting in 17 games. BYU is 16-1 in those games (exception - at Air Force). BYU holds opponents to 64.4 points. Individually BYU has had outstanding defensive efforts, including Michael Vranes containing Lamont Long last week and Terrell Lyday helping hold Eddie House of Arizona State to a 0-16 night -- the only time House has gone without a field goal in his career.

Offense

BYU has scored more than 80 points in a six games and averages 69.8 points. BYU has shot better than 50 percent in 11 games (all wins). BYU made a season-best 61.2 percent of its attempts vs. AFA during its last homestand. With their loss at UNLV, the Cougars have shot below 40 percent five times -- 39.6 at UNLV, 38.1 at CSU, 36.5 percent in a loss at NCAA No. 1-seed Arizona, a season-low 29.6 in a win at UCSB and 29.6 percent at AFA. The Cougars are shooting 45.8 percent (37.6 on threes and 69.9 percent from the line. BYU is 11-0 when it shots 50 percent or better and 19-1 when it out shoots its opponent (except at AFA). Eric Nielsen makes 55 percent to lead BYU. Mekeli Wesley makes 47.3 percent while Todd Christensen (47.0) and Terrell Lyday (46.0) have the best percentages from the back court. Cooper makes a team-best 77.6 percent from the line.
