SALT LAKE -- Hard-nosed defense and a pair of unlikely players pushed No. 21 BYU to a 78-57 win over Hawaii on Saturday at EnergySolutions Arena.
Coming off the bench, junior Stephen Rogers and senior Logan Magnusson both set new career highs, with Rogers scoring 13 points, including three treys, with five rebounds, two assists and one steal in 19 minutes. Magnusson shot 5-of-7 from the field for a career-best 11 points, all in the first half.
On the defensive end, BYU held Hawaii to eight field goals and under 30-percent shooting in the first half and an even 30-percent shooting for the game. The Warriors gave up 16 turnovers and were held to just six assists as a team.
“We got some great minutes from Logan Magnusson and Stephen Rogers because we had Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies get into foul trouble,” Rose said. “And that’s good. Every time you get guys that go in there and they feel comfortable and confident and make shots and make plays for your team, it makes you deeper and helps you down the road.”
The two teams played close until Rogers and Magnusson sparked BYU on a 13-4 run late in the first half. Rogers came off the bench to eight points during the run, including two three-pointers, leading all scorers at halftime with 11 points.
Magnusson followed up with three points of his own to keep the run going, eventually contributing nine points, shooting 4-for-5, and grabbing three rebounds in the first half as BYU pushed ahead by its biggest margin up to that point at 43-27 going into halftime.
Senior point guard Jimmer Fredette, who led all scorers with 16 points, scored six-straight early in the second half. BYU never lost control, maintaining at least a 12-point lead throughout the half. BYU went up by 21 points with 5:12 remaining in the game after sophomore Brandon Davies dove for a loose ball, getting it to senior Jackson Emery who drove the length of the court and dished a no-look pass to freshman Kyle Collinsworth for the dunk, giving BYU a 67-46 lead.
Emery scored six points with four assists and three rebounds. Collinsworth contributed an additional eight points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal.
BYU’s big guys came out early in the contest, with Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies scoring four points apiece to start the game for the Cougars on a 10-2 run. Hartsock added four rebounds, an assist and a block in the same span before both players were forced to quickly sit after getting into foul trouble.
Both players came back in the second half, with Davies ending the game with nine points, four rebounds and three assists and Hartsock finishing with eight points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks.
BYU is next set to travel to Fredette’s hometown of Glens Falls, N.Y., to take on Vermont next Wendesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. ET.

Hawaii’s Last Outing — 54-53 Loss to Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in excruciating fashion with 54-53 setback to Cal Poly Wednesday night at Mott Gym.
Chris O’Brien’s put-back as time expired proved the game-winner as UH fell to 5-1 after its first road game of the year. O’Brien’s put-back concluded a wild final minute of action. The ’Bows overcame a four-point deficit to take a one-point lead only to have the game snatched away on the final play. Trailing 52-48, UH trimmed the deficit to just one after Zane Johnson hit three straight free throws at the 1:01 mark.
After forcing a Mustang turnover, UH got the ball back and capitalized on a Joston Thomas layup with 22 seconds left to take a 54-53 lead. With its last possession Cal Poly (3-3) scrambled for a final shot with UH hunkering down with some tough defense. Shawn Lewis launched an errant three-pointer and Will Donahue’s rebound a mid range shot was also off the mark. But O’Brien was waiting on the weakside to convert at the buzzer and hand Hawai‘i its first blemish of the year. Johnson led Hawai‘i with 11 points and four assists. Thomas added 10 points while freshman Bobby Miles and Trevor Wiseman each contributed 8. Sophomore post Vander Joaquim hauled in 11 rebounds and added three blocks.
UH shot 51 percent from the floor, held the Mustangs to just 33 percent shooting and won the battle of the boards, 34-24. However, all of that still equated to a loss after the turnover-prone Rainbow Warriors finished with 27 turnovers, including 17 in the first half.
Series Notes
Saturday’s game will be the 45th meeting between BYU and Hawai'i. The Cougars hold a 31-13 advantage overall, including a 4-3 record on neutral courts. BYU defeated Hawaii last season, 83-65, at Hawai'i.
