PROVO -- Free-throw shooting helped the No. 7/7 BYU men’s basketball team defeat the Colorado State Rams 84-76 on Wednesday night in the Marriott Center.

"The game was exactly how we thought it would play out as far as how physical it was and how competitive it was," head coach Dave Rose said. "Both teams played with a lot of emotion."

The Cougars made 35-of-43 free throws for the game while shooting 38.6 percent on 22-of-57 shooting from the field. Senior Jimmer Fredette scored 34 points to lead all scorers and passed Devin Durrant for third all-time in scoring in BYU history and now has 2,299 career points.

Sophomore Brandon Davies picked up his third double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds - a career high. BYU would outrebound the Rams 48-29 for the game and grab 18 offensive boards. Senior Jackson Emery scored 11 points and had four steals while junior Noah Hartsock added 10 points and six rebounds.

"Both teams were extremely active on the boards and it was a really important game," Rose said. "Both teams played that way and I was glad we were able to make a few plays down the stretch and were able to win the game."

Hartsock got BYU on the board with a layup after nearly two minutes of play and junior Charles Abouo hit a three-pointer on BYU’s next possession to tie the score at 7-7.

Fredette drilled his first three-pointer of the game with 9:59 left in the first half. The senior guard was also fouled on the play and made his free throw for the four-point play. Davies would make one free throw on the next possession as part of a 14-0 run by the Cougars to give them a 27-13 lead.

Over a four-minute span, Fredette would score 10-straight points to keep the lead at 44-36 at halftime. Fredette led all scorers at the break with 18 points.

BYU shot 42.4 percent on 14-of-33 shooting in the half. Emery scored eight points while Davies helped out on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds and chipping in four points.

The second half started out slow for the Cougars as Colorado State was able to trim the BYU lead to two points at 48-46 after four minutes of play.

BYU was sparked by a one-handed dunk from Davies to put the Cougars on top 54-48 with 13:37 left in the game.

Free throws would help BYU on an 11-2 run to stretch the lead to 69-56 with 9:02 remaining on the clock. BYU made 7-of-8 free throws during the run.

Both teams would get comfortable at the charity stripe for much of the second half with both teams entering the bonus early on. The Cougars would make 9-of-13 free throws over the final nine minutes and Colorado State would make 4-of-7 of their own down the stretch.

Cougars to Host Colorado State on Wednesday

No. 7/7 BYU basketball will return to the Marriott Center on Wednesday, Feb. 23, to host Colorado State at 6 p.m. MT. The Cougars — winners of five-straight — are 25-2 overall and 11-1 in MWC action and are coming off a 79-56 road win against TCU. Jimmer Fredette led five players in double figures with 23 points and Stephen Rogers added 15 points off the bench. Fredette leads the nation in scoring at 27.2 points per game and is shooting .417 from three. Jackson Emery adds 12.7 points and 2.8 steals per game and Brandon Davies is third on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game. Colorado State is 18-8 overall and 8-4 in MWC play and is coming off a 68-61 loss at home to UNLV. The Rams had won three-straight games prior to the UNLV loss, including wins at Wyoming, at home against New Mexico and at TCU. Andy Ogide leads the Rams in scoring (16.3 points per game) and rebounding (7.4 rebounds per game) while shooting .580 from the field. Travis Tranklin adds 13.5 points per game and Wes Eikmeier is third in scoring at 9.4 points per game. Colorado State’s Last Outing — CSU misses chance against UNLV, 68-61

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The CSU Rams had an opportunity to add to their NCAA tournament resume Saturday evening, but came up short as the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels topped CSU, 68-61, at Moby Arena.

CSU (18-8, 8-4 MWC) remains a half-game ahead of UNLV (20-7, 8-5 MWC) for third place in the Mountain West Conference heading into the last two weeks of the regular season.

UNLV went 7-of-13 from three-point land in the second half, taking advantage of a zone defense implemented by the Rams.

“There is always give and take in a defensive game,” Head Coach Tim Miles said. “We just felt like we could run some zone. They were making their threes and then they were also hurting us on the boards. They got 14 offensive rebounds and that is just too many.”

The Rebels’ 14 offensive rebounds led them to 18 more shot attempts than the Rams. CSU outshot UNLV 47.8 percent to 37.5 percent, but UNLV’s extra opportunities proved vital.

The Rams led by five at halftime, 27-22, holding UNLV to just 9-for-35 shooting in the first half. CSU looked as if it was starting to gain control of the contest after a dunk by senior Andy Ogide, followed shortly by a drive and spin move for a layup by Dorian Green to give the Rams an 18-13 lead. A sold-out Moby Arena rocked and rolled all the way to halftime.

UNLV came out in strong fashion in the second half, going on an 11-4 run in the first 4 and-a-half minutes.

An Ogide layup gave the Rams a 39-38 lead at the 12:35 mark of the second half, but UNLV responded with a three-pointer from Oscar Bellfield in its next possession, and CSU was not able to take the lead again in the game.

Ogide led the Rams with 19 points and also added seven rebounds. Sophomore guards Wes Eikmeier and Dorian Green had 13 and 10 points, respectively. UNLV was paced by Bellfield, who hit four threes and totaled 18 points. Rebels forward Chase Stanback scored 12 points and collected 11 rebounds for a double-double.

The sellout was the second of the year at Moby, marking the first time since 1990 that Moby experienced two capacity crowds in the same season.

Saturday was Senior Night at Moby, and Ogide, Adam Nigon, Andre McFarland and Travis Franklin were all honored before the game.

BYU leads the all-time series against Colorado State, 89-46. The Cougars are 56-10 against the Rams at home (32-6 in the Marriott Center) and 11-1 overall under Dave Rose, including a 94-85 win in Fort Collins on Jan. 22, 2011.
